The Melting Of The Wilkins Ice Shelf

March 1, 2009 - 12:01 am

Due to the effects of Global warming the Wilkins Ice Shelf was found to be splintered on April 5th 2009.The process has started many years back but the meltdown has been quicker than predicted.

The Wilkins ice shelf gets its name from the Wilkins Sound, which is a seaway in the Antarctica Peninsula. This ice shelf occupies most of the seaway. This ice shelf measures around 80 nautical miles long and 60 nautical miles wide. The temperatures in this region have been raised by 2.5degrees Celsius since the 1950’s.Besides the rise in temperatures, even earthquakes in this region has contributed to the disintegration of the ice shelf. This shelf, which is approximately the size of Jamaica, would be the largest Ice shelf to break away whenever it happens.
